Chelsea have joined Manchester United and Arsenal in the race to sign Inter defender Andrea Ranocchia, and they have reportedly moved to the front of the queue for the Italian’s signature.

According to The Independent, the centre-back is being touted as a January signing for one of England’s big guns, and with the possible sale of David Luiz in next month’s transfer window, Jose Mourinho is in the hunt for a replacement. There is even talk of a potential swap deal between the clubs, after news surfaced of Inter’s interest in the Brazilian defender. Barcelona’s pursuit of Luiz, however, may be a stumbling block in any possible exchange deal.

Ranocchia, 25, has made 13 Serie A appearances so far this campaign, but the club are now rumoured to be willing to cash in on the player, who has had previous spells at Bari and Genoa.

Ranocchia may have played down reports of a move away from the San Siro but the towering defender is yet to sign a new contract, and could be subject to more speculation as January approaches.
